Edwin Schwartz Coaches Attorneys at San Diego Inn of Court’s Trial Skills Program
Tressler attorney Edwin Schwartz recently took the bench for the San Diego Inn of Court’s Trial Skills Program, which focused on Direct and Cross-Examination. In his role as a judge, Ed provided valuable guidance on how to ask appropriate questions during direct examination, frame narratives through cross-examination, and make proper objections. He is currently a workshop leader for the program. The Trial Skills Program, now in its 50th year, teaches San Diego attorneys essential trial skills and reinforces them through practicing those skills in a courtroom setting.

About the Trial Program
The Trial Program takes place on 6 evenings over 3 consecutive weeks. It includes three presentations by prominent San Diego trial attorneys and members of the judiciary, and three “hands-on” workshops facilitated by experienced workshop leaders and judges. The format is a Thursday lecture followed by a Tuesday workshop. The Trial Practice Program explores Opening Statement, Direct and Cross-Examination, and Closing Argument.
For the workshops, each participant is assigned to a specific fact pattern and paired with another student to conduct the exercises. One participant is assigned to represent the plaintiff and the other is assigned to represent the defendant. A maximum of 4 participants are assigned to each of 22 courtrooms, with each pair having one hour to practice what they learned in the lecture/demonstration, with additional time for questions and answers on each category of performance. About the San Diego Inn of Courts
The San Diego Inn of Court was established in the 1970s by the Honorable Louis Welsh and a group of founding directors who are legends of the San Diego legal community: William G. Bailey, Hon. Richard D. Huffman, Gerald L. McMahon, and Hon. Kevin Midlam. The mission of the Inn is to advance skills and knowledge required for excellent trial advocacy and to enhance ethics and civility within the San Diego County legal community. While inspired by the American Inns of Court, the San Diego Inn of Court is unique. It alone focuses its efforts on preparing San Diego lawyers to try jury trials through two annual programs where each participant gets direct, hands-on training and individualized feedback. Award-winning trial attorneys and judges—with decades of experience—observe and critique each student as they conduct voir dire, opening statement, direct examination, cross-examination, and closing argument.
